Tolepainting Supplies

There are an enormous amount of painting supplies available in the market place. However, for the beginner, some simple household items and a few brushes can start you on your new hobby. For about $25 you'll be ready to begin.

Every painter will need at least 3 brushes to start with, a flat for basecoating and shading/highlighting, a round for strokework, and a liner brush for detail work.

A flat brush, (shown below) size 10 or 12, will provide all the shading and highlighting to make your paintings 3 dimensional.

A round brush (shown below), has full bristles that come to a point on the end. It is great for strokework, painting flowers, leaves, or borders.

A liner brush (shown below), has few bristles, but they are very long. It is used for detail work, such as outlining, scroll work for vines, and lettering.

You could buy a professional brush basin (shown below) but a margerine container or old cup will work fine.

You'll need a stylus, which is a tool used to transfer line drawings on to your project. A ball point pen that has run out of ink will work in a pinch.

Graphite paper shown below (also known as transfer paper) is for copying your line drawing on to your piece. You could use chalk or pencil on the back of your drawing to transfer your design.

A few bottles of acrylic paints, some paper towel, an old t-shirt (in case your are a messy painter like me) a pencil, and a surface to paint on makes up the rest of your beginner supply list.
