Basket Weaving

I learned a bit of basket weaving from a co-worker. We traded painting lessons for basket making lessons. I've only been making baskets for about 2 years, and I don't make them all the time, but I do enjoy it and have made some great baskets for storing things in. My biggest complaint is that I give most of my baskets away, so I decided in the fall of this year (04), I'm going to make and keep a bunch of baskets for myself. The first two below are the start of my own basket collection, I'm not giving them to anyone!

I have made market baskets, gathering baskets, hearth baskets for the fireplace, a spring basket with tulips to hold my knitting, pumpkin baskets, a halloween basket, a July 4th basket, and I look forward to making many more baskets to add to my personal collection this year. I made 6 baskets in September/October 2004, so I'm on my way.

This is a fall basket with a scarecrow. Made in the fall of 2005.
This is a July 4th basket. It has the red, white, and blue stars hanging from the handle. Made in October 2004.
This is the completed pumpkin basket family, created October 2004.
Here is a basket I made (Oct 04) and attempted to paint white. Painting it didn't work out, so I stained over top of it, giving it an antique look.
This is a halloween basket made in September 2004. Completed it has candy corn painted on the handle.
This is a very large basket, the largest I've made so far. I made it for my Aunt Jean in BC. I added some embellishments in the form of metal flowers and a humming bird. Now I have to find a box big enough to send it in the mail!!!
This is a very large basket, I've only made one of these so far. Great for storing knitting needles and yarn!
This is a basket I've made about 10 times already, I still don't have one for me yet! It's supposed to hold a bottle of wine and 2 wine glasses, but it also works great as a gardening tool holder! I sent this as a spring exchange gift this year, I added the grape tag (tole painted) on each side of the basket.
This is a close up of the grape tags I painted.

Christmas 2002 Mitch and Tiana both made a small basket (similar to the one shown here) and they were quite pleased with their efforts.

This is a cute Christmas Basket, and the pattern is available free here.
Here is a picnic basket, great for camping or the beach. This pattern is also available for free here.
